A closer look at the finish

A different finish. In just the right places.

Spot clear printing applies a transparent ink or varnish to selected areas of a graphic. Instead of making the entire surface glossy, it can draw attention to a logo, pattern, image detail, or other part of the artwork.

Often discussed as spot gloss, clear UV ink, or selective varnish, the effect depends on the printing system, material, artwork, and lighting. The photograph shows the reflective contrast on LUX’s own sample, not a simulated finish.

Our focus is large-format commercial graphics. Tell us where the finished piece will be seen, how it will be handled, and which details should stand out. We will review the proposed material and finish before quoting production.

Material compatibility and the final appearance are confirmed through project review and sample testing.

Where the detail matters

Bring us the application. We’ll review the finish.

These are wide-format project directions to explore with production. Suitability is determined for each substrate and installation, rather than assumed across every material.

Retail & point-of-purchase displays

Explore selective highlights around brand marks, product imagery, and display details that shoppers see at close range. Consider the lighting and viewing angle alongside the design.

Rigid panels & branded interiors

Discuss a spot-clear treatment for a display panel, lobby graphic, or interior brand feature. Acrylic and other rigid materials need a compatibility review before the finish is specified.

Plan the whole graphic

The finish starts with the specification.

Spot clear is one part of the job. The base material, printed color, selective clear layer, finishing, and installation should be considered together.

LUX supports commercial graphics projects from its Shirley, New York production location, working with brands, agencies, retailers, and property teams across Long Island and New York City.

Material & environment
Share the proposed substrate, indoor or outdoor location, mounting method, cleaning needs, and expected handling.
Artwork & clear areas
Provide the color artwork and a reference showing where clear highlights should appear. Ask production for its required layer names and file setup before preparing final output.
Size, quantities & timing
Include finished dimensions, number of pieces, delivery location, and your installation date. Coverage and sampling can affect the production plan.
Sample approval
Review a representative sample under relevant lighting before committing to a wider run. Confirm the appearance, adhesion, and any handling or finishing limitations.

Before you specify

Spot clear printing questions

Is spot clear the same as printing on clear material?

No. Spot clear refers to a selectively applied clear finish. Printing on transparent film or acrylic describes the substrate. A project can involve one or both, but they are separate specifications.

Is spot clear the same as lamination?

No. Lamination adds a separate film layer. Spot clear uses a selectively printed clear treatment for a visual effect. Do not assume it replaces a protective laminate or provides scratch, weather, or UV resistance.

Can the finish be raised or textured?

Some wide-format printing systems can create layered or textured clear effects. Those are not automatic properties of every spot-clear job. Ask LUX to confirm the available effect, material, and sample result for your project.

Can it be used on window film, vinyl, or outdoor graphics?

These applications need a specific production review. Flexibility, adhesion, cutting, exposure, and installation conditions can change the material requirements. Send the intended use to LUX before specifying a clear finish on film, vinyl, or exterior work.

What do you need to quote a spot-clear project?

Send the dimensions, quantities, proposed material, artwork or visual reference, selected clear areas, project location, and deadline. If the material is undecided, describe the finished application so production can review the options with you.
